Landscaping and external works

Paving, terraces, planting and drainage for practical spaces around the building.

Ability Group

Landscaping and external works

External spaces connect the building with daily movement, relaxation and maintenance. We plan and deliver works around levels, access, surface loading and rainwater routes, coordinating practical details with the architecture and landscape concept.

Levels and drainage

We clarify levels, existing utilities and drainage outlets. Bases and falls are prepared so paths, drives and terraces work together. Junctions against the building are assessed before surfaces are installed.

Paving, paths and terraces

We construct surfaces, edging and terraces suited to their use. Base layers account for loading and ground conditions. Interfaces with gates, steps and doors are resolved for convenient movement.

Planting and completion

Soil preparation, lawns and planting follow the agreed layout. External lighting cables and other services are coordinated before finished surfaces are closed. We also discuss ongoing care of the grounds.

Outdoor space for movement and relaxation

The layout follows how people approach the building, park and use the garden. A driveway, pedestrian path and terrace have different loading and care requirements. These areas are coordinated with entrances and ground levels to avoid awkward transitions or unintended changes in height.

Positions for bins, bicycles, garden equipment and other everyday items are also considered. Materials are reviewed for appearance, use and upkeep. Where external work is phased, lighting and other service provisions beneath finished surfaces are planned early, allowing later additions without unnecessarily reopening new paths or paved areas.

The main elements of landscaping cost

Area, base condition, level changes and intended loading all influence cost. Allowances need to cover excavation, base layers, edging, fixings and drainage as well as paving or decking itself. Planting budgets depend on soil preparation and the planting specification.

The proposal is divided into understandable work packages so priorities can be established. Access and external service provisions may, for example, be considered separately from decorative garden areas. Phase boundaries take account of later plant movements and the overall drainage strategy, protecting completed surfaces and preserving the intended falls as the site develops.

Starting information and work planning

A site plan, photographs and information about buried utilities are useful starting points. If a landscape design exists, share surface layouts, levels and specifications. Identify vehicle routes and how relaxation areas will be used.

A visit addresses drainage outlets, access and trees or other features to retain. Timing is coordinated with building construction so heavy equipment finishes before sensitive surfaces and planting are installed. Handover includes discussion of paving, terrace and new-planting care. Different materials and plants need different maintenance, making this a useful part of selection and completion rather than an afterthought.

Frequently asked questions

During design, so levels and external utilities can be coordinated. Finished surfaces usually follow completion of heavy construction operations.

Yes. We review the surface, base and drainage to establish whether relaying is sufficient or base renewal is also needed.

Utilities and provisions beneath surfaces are normally coordinated before final paving. This helps avoid unnecessarily reopening newly completed areas later.

Yes. We discuss appearance, use, care and the supporting construction, matching material choices to detailing and the client’s maintenance expectations.
